Chairperson For 2010: Barbara Ravert
The Disaster Relief Team is a self -supporting committee established for the purpose of offering assistance in rebuilding homes destroyed by natural disasters.
A sizeable group of dedicated volunteers give one week of their time (usually in June) to travel to predetermined areas of need. For the past several summers the team has helped many families return to their homes in the wake of various natural disasters including tornados and floods. In order to carry out their ministry, the team has travelled extensively to out of the area locations as far away as North Dakota, Tennessee, North Carolina and others. The types of jobs the team accomplishes range from putting up drywall, masonry, carpentry, roofing, plumbing, painting and clean up. The team also offers emotional support and encouragement to their clients, who are often overwhelmed with their losses and ongoing displacement.
The Disaster Relief Team has also responded to needs closer to home in the Montgomery and
Turbotville areas as well as for Haven Ministry and the Warrior Run School District.
Throughout the year the Team works on various fund raising projects to finance their
relief efforts. Some of the annual events are an apple dumpling sale, soup sale, and
chicken pot pie dinner. The fund raising activities are times of great fellowship and
enjoyment. Most members of the Team began with limited experience but continue to learn
more with each project. The Team has wonderful teachers with patience and encouragement to
spare. If you are at all interested in learning more about the team or joining in our
efforts (we find a job for everyone!) call the church office at 649-5195. All are welcome.
Children must be eleven years old; youth under eighteen may participate if they have an
adult team member who agrees to be their mentor.
